As a San Antonio
newspaper noted, "We can perhaps say with safety that there is not a habitation
in southwest Texas not Northern Mexico, which can be safely reached by rail or wagon,
that has not got one or more planks about it from the yards of Steves & Sons."
In 1904, when
large Texas lumber interests began to stock sash & doors from Mississippi River
Mills, the Steves decided to set up a plant to manufacture millwork in San Antonio.
By 1912, the new mill was so successful it was established as a new entity, Steves
Sash & Door, seperate from the lumberyard.
